Life

I luckily tested negative this week, so I could go back to work on Tuesday. Never been so happy about a negative result!

Blog and books

I finished Of Mice and Men this weekend. It was a fascinating book, even though it was rather short I felt got to know to charachters well. It's rare a book almost makes me cry but my eyes watered at the end. Can't recommend this one enough! I'm hoping to read more Steinbeck soon.
That said the book is dated and does contain racist comments and words, which did make me uncomfortable at times.

Movies and TV Shows

I watched BlacKkKlansman yesterday and was blown away by this film. It's an important film that should have gotten more awards. It's so frustrating and downright scary that such people/groups still exist today. It's one of the best films I have seen so far this year.

Life

Life has been busy and crazy these past two weeks, I'm currently in quarantine until Tuesday because of a high risk contact at work and since I only got the booster the same day, I had to go home on Friday :( I've been taking a test every day and really hope I won't end up seeing a positive result, so far so good, though. It's not fun to teach from home when your students are at school, though.

Blog and books

So far I have managed to read two books this year, Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut and How Do You Live? by Genzaburo Yoshino. I liked both but I don't think these will be new favourites.

I have also started three other books The Daily Stoic, which I plan to read every day, Reasons to Stay Alive by Matt Haig and a new audiobook, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. I've been enjoying listening to biographies and can always use some recommendations!

Movies and TV Shows

I recently watched Gaslight (the British version) because Stephen Fry recommended it on a Belgian TV show, so how could I resist? I highly recommend it as well!

I also started watching the Antiques Roadshow on the BBC again and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Really enjoying both of them.

Life

Happy New Year! I wish you all a great year full of hope, love, books and peace!
I hope you had a lovely Christmas as well!

I have been busy with making creating in my spare time in order to relax but still feel productive. I'm thinking about maybe putting them up for sale, I don't think it will be very lucrative but I think it's an experience worth having.

Blog and books

I didn't manage to read all the books I wanted to read in December and only ended up reading 48 books this year (a low number for me). However, I read a lot of great books and I did succeed in my personal challenge to read more nonfiction and classics.

These are my favourite books of 2021, in no particular order, although, Anna Karenina, Know My Name, Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead and Lonely Castle in the Mirror were my absolute favourites which I still vividly remember. I can't recommend them enough!

Which were your favourite books last year? Leave a comment or a link down below!

Movies and TV Shows

I have watched some fun films these past weeks, like La Famille BĂ©lier and I rewatched some old  favourites: Roman Holiday, How to Steal a Million and The Shop Around the Corner. Yesterday I watched Men & Chicken, probably the strangest film I have ever watched, still not sure what to make of it.

I also caught up on some TV Shows: The Mandalorian (love the baby!), Loki, Wandavision (can you tell I just got Disney Plus?). The Mandalorian is definitely my favourite show I watched on it.

Life

Next week will be extremely busy for me, as my students have to take my exam and I don't have a lot of time to correct those as they have all been planned at the end of the exam period. Not stressed out about that at all :o

Also, I have been doing some pottery throwing lessons this year and I recently made this mug. I adore it even though it's not perfect.

Blog and books

I haven't been reading much lately which makes me a little sad. Hope to still read this one and Jane Eyre this year though.

Movies and TV Shows

I finally watch Crazy Rich Asians and while I didn't dislike it at all, I also do not really understand the hype. I somehow expected more from this one though. I also watched Yesterday, A Christmas Carol (watched this one before) and Elf. I finally put up the Christmas three as well this weekend, hoping to get fully into the Christmas spirit soon, although everyone around me doesn't appear to enjoy the Christmas period as much.

Life

Due to the rising numbers the government decided on some new restrictions but I don't believe these will be enough. Schools are still open and I hope this will not provide more problems when the exams start in two weeks.

Blog and books

I haven't read much this week as work has been taking over, which will probably continue to be the case until Christmas break. I did make a slow start in the audiobook of Sapiens, though.
This year I still hope to read four books (although this might turn out to be a too big a challenge): Beautiful World, Where Are You, Sapiens, Jane Eyre and Letter's to a Young Poet

Which books do you want to read before the end of the year?

Movies and TV Shows

I didn't watch much either, just rewatched Atonement and Night at the Museum so I can use them in some of my lessons. Atonement is still such an incredible and heart-breaking film. Highly recommend it and the book as well!

Life

Covid is coming back with a vengeance again, which is definitely something that makes me sad, especially since I don't see this changing any time soon.

We did have a paella evening with my Spanish students on Friday which luckily went well (so many things could have gone wrong) and the students really seemed to have enjoyed themselves.

Blog and books

I finished The Crucible and Wintering and have started three other books: Beautiful World, Where Are You, Passing and Sapiens. I will probably only by able to finish Passing this month.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Crucible although it was a very infuriating topic.
Wintering was a bit of a disappointment, which was entirely my fault, as I hoped it would be more about how different cultures experience the darker months but got a memoir instead.

I also read my first poetry collection in a very long time, Poems by Wilfred Owen, perfect reading material on the 11th of November. Highly recommend it!

Movies and TV Shows

I started watching a Belgian show for once, called Grond. So far I'm quite enjoying it. The characters sometimes remind me of some of my former students (at least the way they talk). Any fellow Belgians watching this show as well?

Aside from that, I found out that the Spanish show Gran Hotel is no longer available on any of my streaming platforms and I really wanted to finish this show this year. Sadly it's also not available on dvd anymore either, which even irritates me more. I started rewatching the first season of La Casa de Papel again.

Life

I'm a little sad that now I only find the time to blog sporadically instead keeping things more up to date. This is because I have been teaching more than fulltime for the new schoolyear and I haven't found much time to read and write. I was hoping things would settle down next week but this situation will continue until Christmas break. Hopefully, I'll a better work-life balance after that.

That said, I just had a week off and enjoyed starting and finishing three books! It felt so incredibly fantastic, to get some time to myself again. Also, a bit sad it's already over, though.

Blog and books

Now, what did I read during my time off, you ask? Well, I finally read Frankenstein, The Woman in the Purple Skirt and the brilliant Piranesi. I once more felt completely like myself again whilst reading these wonderful books. Currently also listening to Wintering and am two pages into The Crucible (I actually have no idea how this story will go, which is exciting as I often already know a bit of the plot of classics).

Movies and TV Shows

I watched some spooky/Halloweeny films during the last weeks: Edward Scissorhands (one of my favourites!), the music has been on repeat in my head for days now, maybe even weeks. This is such an enchanting story and soundtrack, I can't get enough of it. (I also may or may not have a poster like the one above in my room.)

I also watched Hocus Pocus for the first time as I see this one popping up every year near Halloween and I really wanted to know what it was like.
I probably would have liked it better to watch it as a child, but it was still enjoyable. You could say they put a spell on my after all.

Another spooky favourite is Practical Magic, I haven't read the books yet, but I'm curious to read them as well.

Some of the TV shows I watched and enjoyed are The White Queen, The White Princess, Squid Game, My Name (also liked the soundtrack) and Sex Education (I quite liked Maeve Wiley's taste in literature!).

Well, I'm off the listen a bit more to Edward Scissorhands' enthralling music and prepare a bit more for work tomorrow.
