Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books I Struggled to Get Into But Ended Up Loving

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week bloggers post their top ten on a previously suggested topic. This week's topic is top ten books I struggled to get into but ended up loving after all. I didn't quite get 10 books for this topic, so here's my top 8.

1. Ship of Magic (Liveship Traders #1) by Robin Hobb

Honestly, all of Robin Hobb's books fit under this category for me! They are so long but the ending is always worth it! Can't wait to read the second book! Can anyone tell me if that will be as slow as this one, though?

2. They Can't Kill Us All: The Story of Black Lives Matter by Wesley Lowery

It took me some time to get into this book as I don't read a lot of non-fiction and I'm not American and not familiar with most of the names. It can be very dense at times but I'm glad I read it! Review to come!

3. Sleeping Giants (Themis Files #1) by Sylvain Neuvel

I don't read a lot of science-fiction but this book got so much hype recently, I decided to pick it up. It took me a while to really get into to it, possibly because of a reading slump. I wouldn't say I ended up loving it, but I did enjoy it more near the end.

4. The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

In the beginning, you are mostly wondering what is going on but around half way through, I couldn't help falling in love with this novel. It's a terrifying but essential read. I can highly recommend the TV show as well!

5. Death of a Hero by Richard Aldington

I ultimately wrote my thesis on this First World War novel as well as the following Indian First World War novel.

6. Across the Black Waters by Mulk Raj Anand

I find that I appreciate novels so much more when I take the time to study them. I will always have a place in my heart for the books I based my thesis on.

7. Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain

This is the story of a nurse during the First World War which I had to read for my World War I literature class, I struggled in the beginning but it was definitely worth it.

8. Nevernight (The Nevernight Chronicle #1) by Jay Kristoff

The worldbuilding and footnotes are pretty dense in the beginning but I couldn't put the second half of book down. I already pre-ordered the sequel and I can't wait to read it!

Which books did you struggle with but ended up loving? Have you read any of the books mentioned above or are you planning to? Leave your thoughts down below!

  1. You're the second person to mention The Handmaid's Tale this week. I loved it from the beginning of the first page, although I definitely agree that it takes its time to show the reader what is really going on.

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.

  4. Great list! I'm determined to cross The Handmaid's Tale off my TBR this year and I've heard quite a lot of good things about the adaptation - I must read the book first, though. =) I need to read some Robin Hobb, too, because I'm sure I'll love her work. I remember reading some of Vera Brittain's work in school and really enjoying it!

    1. I read it before the TV show came out, it was the perfect motivation for me to finally pick it up. I hope you'll enjoy both of them! I love Vera Brittain! But the movie is horrible but the novel is great!

    1. It does get a lot better in the second half, but the first half was a bit of struggle for me as well.
